Writer: Charlsie PecoraroCharlsie Pecoraro

This week interior designer, Diane Cashen, joined me for lunch at my home. I opened the door and was greeted by my lovely friend holding this gorgeous Flamingo Lily! She is a lady after my heart since I absolutely adore houseplants. This one has a new home on my desk and is giving me so much joy daily.

Did you know that houseplants can contribute to your overall health? Psychologically, they ground you by bringing in elements of nature. Health wise, some plants are fantastic air cleaners. Here are a few common varieties that will filter your interior. The easy to grow Spider plant, English ivy, Aloe Vera, Flamingo Lily and Broad Lady Palm are all great air cleaners. In the Spotlight: Diane Cashen Interiors

Diane Cashen is an extraordinary interior designer with years of residential and commercial projects in her portfolio. Her former career as a graphic designer provides her with a strong foundation in the use of color and perspective. She applies these principles to her thriving design business.

We caught up last week over a delicious lunch and she shared that she has been very busy over the past few months. In fact, she has quite a few folks waiting for her to schedule initial consultations.

I asked her why the sudden surge in requests for her expertise. She believes that people are spending more time in their houses and they are noticing unfinished projects. They have decided to invest in their home environments and want them to reflect their personal tastes.

One of Diane's strong traits is that she is a master of using items that you already own and adding new elements to freshen up a space. She is not one of those dreadful designers that says to "gut" your room. Working with the things that you love is important to her. You have to live in the space once she completes the project. Her desire is that you will feel comfortable and happy in your home.

Consultations with Diane are by appointment only. You can call or text her at 251-545-5688 to set one up.

“Your home should tell the story of who you are, and be a collection of what you love.” ~ Nate Berkus

Book Corner #10

I have been participating in a John Maxwell training for the past 4 weeks. It is based on this book, Change Your World. Citing examples of the difference that one person can make is one of the key elements of this book.

The reader is given very clear cut ways to pursue personal passions that can help others. It has been an enjoyable and informative read. I am looking forward to putting action behind my good intentions.

If you are interested in joining a Change Your World 8-week table visit the website at www.changeyourworld.com. Anyone, anywhere can make a difference. It all begins "around a table". These virtual table gatherings are making an impact across the nation. There is no fee for joining a transformation table!

Women's History Month - Wangari Maathai, 1940-2011

In doing research on famous women in history, I came across Wangari Maathai, an environmental activist. This Kenyan founded the Green Belt Movement. It focused on campaigning to plant trees, women's rights and environmental conservation. 51 million trees have been planted in Kenya because of her. She was the first women from East & Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree. Maathai was elected to parliament and appointed assistant minister for Environment and Natural Resources from 2003– 2005. Her life's work was internationally recognized. In 2004, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, peace and democracy. Warmer days are beginning to blanket the Gulf Coast. Neighbors are sprucing up their yards and folks are making their way to our lovely beaches.

This week, I encourage you to spend some time outdoors. Perhaps you can add a bird feeder to your yard or plant some colorful flowers in a pot.

Take a simple step and do one thing every day this week that brings you some joy. Your life will be so much more fulfilling when you make yourself a priority.
