Today marks a "long weekend" for many workers in the United States. In 1894, the first Monday of September became a federal holiday recognizing the contributions and achievements of American workers. These workers represented the nation's strength, leadership and freedom.
When I was a young girl, Labor Day meant the end of glorious summers and of course, no more wearing white. The "you can't wear white after Labor Day," rule was created to separate the old money elitists from the new money group. For those who had money and could leave the city during warmer months, white was considered vacation attire. So now we know where that one came from! I tend to disregard this rule and wear some winter whites and creamy cable knit sweaters.
I hope that you have a relaxing day planned with your friends and family. Many water enthusiasts will be out on the bay or gulf if the weather cooperates. Happy Labor Day!
Hurricane Ida Recovery
Last week I was preoccupied with the approach of Hurricane Ida. I apologize for not blogging; however my thoughts were with everyone in Louisiana. It was making a beeline to Baton Rouge where I have family and friends. A little wobble caused it to veer off course by about 20 miles putting the Red Stick on the western side of the storm sparing it from the worst of the weather.
Unfortunately it headed right over the Houma-Thibodaux area where I lived for decades. I have spent the past week reaching out to friends that still live there. I will say that these folks are resilient and know how to pull together as a community. I have seen images of huge gumbo pots set up at central points to feed the hungry. Local chefs are teaching people how to cook the food in their freezer before it goes bad. I know there are plenty of impromptu block gatherings happening in neighborhoods across the south. My heart is with all of these people who are suffering through the devastation and loss of utilities.
I want to give a shout out to a couple of local boss partners who are stopping what they are doing in their companies to help those in need. Houston Horne, owner of Handy Guys Moving Services, is loading a 14 foot trailer with water, tarps and anything else he can find to head to the Bayou State.
Grant Hibberts, owner of Hibberts Auto Services is heading out with a group to work in debris removal for the next couple of weeks.
How can you help? One of the best contacts is local fire departments in the area. These folks know where the biggest needs are in the community. My sincere thanks to everyone helping our neighbors in South Louisiana.

Things Happening Across the Gulf Coast!
Last week, boss partners, Stan & Mary Kay Chapman closed the retail store front of A Coastal Zen! The great news is that they are offering an online place to shop! I certainly will miss visiting the crystal store, yet I am excited about supporting their online presence. Go check them out by clicking here. Keep visiting over the next few weeks because they will be adding merchandise daily!
Are you looking for a quick getaway along the coast? Recently, I had the pleasure of relaxing by the pool at The Palace Casino in Biloxi. Even though I am not a gambler, I thoroughly enjoyed this smoke free destination.
As you can see, poolside was pretty desolate with only a handful of people enjoying the sunrise. It was quiet and the staff throughout the hotel was very attentive.
The hotel has a resort "feel" with large suite type accommodations. I had a corner King suite with a jacuzzi tub! The view included the Gulf of Mexico.
I did not leave the hotel for any meals because the restaurants were amazing. The Palace Cafe & Bakery was a great place to pick up a fresh cup of coffee and a pastry from their award winning chef! Insider tip: You can go back for refills of java for 12 hours if you keep your receipt! For a coffee lover this is heaven! I am planning a return visit and booking a little spa time at Pure! Go check out all of the pampering these professionals offer by clicking here. Pure is open Thursday - Monday.
The boss dogs had their own spa day at Apollo's Paws in Mobile. Rebecca and Mandy do an incredible job keeping these guys looking sharp.
They are "showing off" their latest shower & shave to all the other doggies in the neighborhood. Walking them is a great excuse to get out in the sunshine and soak up some Vitamin D. It is a total brain reset for me on a daily basis.
Apollo's Paws is located on the corner of Grelot and Knollwood and is by appointment. Give the doggie spa a call at 251-725-6178 to get your fur kids on the calendar. Insider Tip: You can schedule an entire year of monthly grooming online! Ask Rebecca how to access her online system or visit meetdaboss.com/apollospaws.
On Friday, I caught up with Camille Wilkinson of Direct Mortgage Loans. Her office was bustling with activity! She has assembled a team of loan partners who are ready to help folks buy or refinance a home.
She said that the market is still thriving and helping potential buyers close on their next purchase is inspiring.
Here are a couple of benefits of shifting from being a renter to a buyer:
Mortgage Interest is tax deductible
Ability to build wealth with equity
Pride of ownership
Freedom to modify your property
Lowering your cost of living
Give her office a call today to see how you can get started at 251-378-9359.
If you have read previous blogs, you know that I enjoy cooking and entertaining at home. When I discover a wonderful place to dine, I want to share it with you! Osman's in Mobile is a "don't miss" in the restaurant world.
Owners and husband-wife team, Osman & Micki are both culinary trained chefs. Here is a sneak peek at an appetizer that has it's own cult following! The shrimp gorgonzola is one of the best starters I have ever eaten.
This little restaurant is by reservation only, so be sure to give them a call at 251-479-0006. It is located on Halls Mill Road in Mobile. This is the ideal date night destination for a romantic evening. There is an extensive wine list by the glass or bottle and a full bar as well. The dress code is dressy casual, so ladies pull out those heels and a cute dress or pants. Gentlemen typically wear dress pants with a button down shirt.
