On Tuesday, November 5th, United States citizens will have the opportunity to cast their ballot for the candidates of their choice. I urge everyone to use their voice and their right to vote this week. Popular vote will take on greater meaning if there are any disputes in the election results. I try to remain neutral on politics, however I will share something that I heard on a podcast this week. Instead of voting for a political party, let's vote for what is right for the country and her people. Click here for more information about this general election.
This Sunday, November 3rd please remember to set your manual clocks back one hour and enjoy the extra sleep time! Do you know that there are two states that do not do daylight savings time? They are Hawaii and Arizona! About 63% of Americans would prefer to get rid of daylight saving time altogether, according to surveys from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
The history of daylight savings is mistakenly attributed to Benjamin Franklin. He had nothing to do with this twice per year altering of our clocks.
In fact, the history is convoluted with its origin being traced back to Germany in 1916. War times meant that saving energy was important and this was one way to do it. The United States enacted daylight savings in 1918 however it only lasted seven months before being repealed.
Franklin D Roosevelt brought it back in 1942 during World War II and ended it in 1945. Again, this was an energy saving measure.
All of this back and forth created chaos in time keeping. Congress took action in 1966 passing the Uniform Time Act. Hawaii and Arizona opted out and have stuck with standard time keeping.
What do you think of daylight savings time? Personally I would vote to go back to standard time.
Monday, November 11th is Veterans Day in the United States. We have the opportunity to recognize all of the brave men and women who have served in our military.
If you are looking for an event to attend with your favorite veteran, the USS Alabama Battleship park will be hosting a celebration beginning at 3PM lasting until 9PM. The Mobile Pops will present their annual Veterans Day concert, on Monday, Nov. 11, 2024, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Medal of Honor Aircraft Pavilion at Battleship Memorial Park. The concert will feature traditional patriotic music, military marches, contemporary favorites, and more.
Here is a wacky holiday! Wednesday, November 13th is National Hug a Musician Day. I imagine my resident drummer will remind me that he needs a few extra hugs that day! How about this one? November 15th is National Clean Out Your Fridge day. I wonder how many of us will be "celebrating that one? I am starting to believe there is a "holiday" for everything we do these days!

I snagged this happy picture of Josh Hembree giving back to the community from his business social media account. It was just too good not to share. Here is what he had to say about his company's involvement. "Loving and supporting our community is the core of who we are as a company. Making sure great teachers are seen and appreciated through the WKRG Golden Apple Awards is one small way we get to give back to those that give so much to our children and our community!
One trait that we see across the board is that they absolutely love our children and have a true passion seeing those lightbulb moments with their students. We are so blessed to have an abundance of wonderful teachers"!
Hembree Heating and Air Conditioning is a family owned and operated local company dedicated to keeping customers comfortable, no matter what the weather is outside. Call them at 251-259-4664 for repairs or join their VIP Comfy Club and save $!
Last week, I ran into Jessica Zoltek, a licensed insurance agent specializing in Medicare Supplement plans. When asked about the Annual Open Enrollment, she expressed her concerns for folks who are not reviewing their prescription drug coverage. It appears that every plan has been affected and therefore it is imperative that everyone looks at their policies for the adjustments. Jessica will be happy to go over changes and options with you. Give her a call at 251-751-5434 to schedule some time with her. Remember enrollment ends on December 7, 2024.
Do you own an LLC? My friends at Lindsey & Waldo CPA firm in Mobile wanted me to spread the word about the importance of filing your BOI report (Beneficial Ownership Information Report). The good news for business owners is there is no fee, however it is a requirement. Companies founded prior to January 1, 2024 must submit their report before the January 1, 2025 deadline. Here is the link for filing. Click here. Companies founded this year must file within 90 days. If you have questions, you can give Paula or Richard a call. I appreciate them bringing this requirement to our attention.
Thank you for continuing to support this platform and the local businesses in our community.
Have a wonderful November and I hope it is filled with moments of pure joy! ~ Charlsie
